"Suspense & Gallows Humor" is the new show at Gallery1988 in Venice, California. Gallery1988 shows feature pop-culture art, and this month's show features work inspired by the films of Alfred Hitchcock. I'm absolutely in love with this piece by Danielle Rizzolo.
As a child, I saw two movies on TV that almost made me fill my footie pajamas. One was the 1958 creature feature The Blob, and the other was Hitchcock's The Birds. While The Blob was certainly terrifying (to a six year old), it was The Birds that added something extra sinister: sickening dread. I knew even then that it was pretty unlikely that an alien jello was going to fall to earth and begin a rampage against teenagers. But birds? Who knew what was going on behind those reptilian eyes. Hitchock took the familiar and attacked you with it. Now that was scary.
